I just found this blog through Christine and it really struck a chord in me. What am I doing to help the less fortunate in my area? It`s great to help children in Uganda or Rwanda and I`m definitely not opposed to it, but I live in a country where something like 75% of the [...]

Big Brothers and Mud Don`t Mix
Posted on December 30, 2008 - Filed Under Kids | 3 Comments
This is what I found after hearing bloodcurdling shrieks outside yesterday morning. I ran out and found Dante scrubbing at his eyes and sobbing while Dorian sat above him, hands full of mud, looking rather guilty.
“Did you do this to your brother?” I was NOT happy. Dorian hung his head and said, “Yes.” In [...]

A Day of Convite

Every year on the 27th, San Juan holds a dance festival where a bunch of people dress up in costumes they`ve been preparing for months and follow trucks with speakers through the streets. They dance all through town, then they all dance in a competition in the town square and one group is chosen as [...]

Ok, not so random, these were all taken yesterday, but they aren`t of my kids!
Preparing the park for the big celebration.
The church in San Juan, it`s over 400 years old, I believe. The decorations are plastic balls and straws, the straws make the hoops and the starbursts.
Serving up tostadas in the park.

The Evolution of Christmas

When I was little, Christmas was such an exciting time. We didn`t have Santa, but every Christmas Eve, my mom would slip into our rooms sometime in the wee hours of the morning and leave heavy stockings at the foot of our bed for us to dig into in the morning. The idea was to [...]
Feliz Navidad!

Hope you are all having a great Christmas. We`ve been up most of the night (went to bed at 3 am!) but despite being up for several hours to light fireworks and eat tamales at Midnight, the boys were up bright and early and ready for presents.
I`ll be posting photos later, of course, though [...]
The Magic in the Air (could we get some over here, please?)

Christmas Eve, people. Are you ready? Though I seriously enjoy Christmas more now that I have kids, it is decidedly more stressful, too! Oh well. It will all be worth it tonight when they flip out over fireworks and Guatemalan gifts! And again in the morning with stockings and family gifts.
Being less than 24 hours [...]
I Have Been Initiated

Dorian was a very difficult baby. He cried all the time. He had reflux. He never slept more than 2 hours at a time, usually more like 15 min. But seriously? He wasn`t BAD baby. He listened when I said “no”. He tried something once and if he got hurt, he almost ALWAYS left it [...]
