A Little Complication

Those of you who have read this blog for a while know that Dorian was born with an imperforate anus and has had three intestinal surgeries. Thanks to his very good health and fairly careful attention to his diet, we have managed to avoid having too many issues with this. Until now, that is.
Sometimes, when children who have had intestinal surgery grow, they have problems and Dorian has been growing like a weed lately. Unfortunately, that has affected him negatively in that he hasn’t had a proper bowel movement in nearly 9 days. He often goes several days without, becomes exceedingly grumpy and then gets rid of everything at once. We try hard to ensure that he eats mostly fruit and veggies and keep refined sugar to a minimum . . . not an easy task with the in-laws who think the base food group is candy and that I am terribly cruel for not wanting my children to eat it.
So, today, we had to do the first enema in 9 months. This for a little boy who was supposed to have one a day! Still, he was NOT happy to see that bottle again. Unfortunately, we are still waiting to see if it will take effect and he will have to go see the doctor today. I´m really hoping that this is going to work, because if he ends up with an impacted bowel, the option is more intestinal surgery.
Update: Dorian started vomiting shortly after the enema and we took him to the doctor who checked him over and sent us for tests saying that Dorian has two separate issues, one of which is being dealt with by the enema. The other? We’re waiting for the results, but it could be rotovirus, another type of virus or a parasite.

Oh, not good news. I am hoping and praying that all gets moving again . . . and soon! Perhaps lots of extra hugs.
Poor little fella… I do ope that it all works out!
Just yesterday, I was visiting a friend of mine, who is in hospital with her 2yo daughter who HAS HAD an impacted bowel, colon, and up into her intestines as well! They put a nasal-gastro tube in, and apparantly, put a solution down in the morning that helps ‘unblock’ and of an evening put an electrolyte solution to rehydrate her… MOST of it is now clear, but there is still a blockage in the colon… Hoping this will clear anyday.
SO, I hope his will clear sooner rather than later by surgery!
Poor thing, wish I could donate him my overactive bowels! Is rotovirus bad? Or mild?
I think all grandparents think base food group is candy. Mine surely does. When I was still living near them I get chocolates everyday. They probably believe I’d drop dead if I don’t have one each day. LOL! Aaaah, I love grandparents!
Hope the little guy feels better soon.
Rotovirus in itself isn’t horrible, just like the flu. But in kids it is dangerous because they get dehydrated very quickly and can die if care isn’t taken.
