A Very Strange Rain

I was working away in my room tonight and when I went out to talk to Irving, I noticed a hissing sound, rather like the sound snow makes when it’s falling, that prickly ssss noise. I asked what it was and he couldn’t hear it at first.
We went outside to see if it was the wind . . . but there was no wind! And I figured it was raining since I felt something fall on me . . . but it wasn’t wet.
Finally, I grabbed a sheet of paper and stuck it outside. Moments later, under the light, we examined it and found that it was sand! I guess Volcan Fuego had indigestion tonight and we’re getting the byproducts of it!

Very strange! I remember experiencing my first sandstorms in Cairo.. the air turned a funny yellow, and you’re right, sand in the air makes a funny hiss. The grit hitting the windows is a strange sound too. Never saw sand as ‘rain’ before, without wind. Cool!
Does that happen often??? It would be a very strange sensation to have sand rain down on you, but pretty cool too.
Wow… that is nothing like I have ever experienced! Sand is hard enoughto get out from between your toes– but for it is rain down on your house? Crazy!
I think it’s happened once before, but then it was more ash than sand. It was definitely weird!
Just take care of your kids’ and your eyes. We get ash and sand all the time, because Santiaguito erupts a couple of times a day.
I guess I’d rather have this, and the occasional 5.7 degree tremor than what Chile got this weekend.
True! Though I have to say that Chile has handled it very well . . . they seem to have been built to withstand earthquakes.
