Always Learning

I love how little kids pick up on stuff without you even having to teach them. The boys are constantly inspecting, exploring and prodding to find out how things work. While sometimes this is detrimental to certain things (squished bugs, broken toys, etc.) it is also amazing to watch.
Dorian and I planted a garden the other day. We have a container garden, but Dante destroyed it and the only thing that survived was a big bucket where we had planted the peas. Which are thriving, by the way. So, I decided to try just planting directly in the ground outside our master bedroom and Dorian came along to help me out.
We discussed seeds and how they grow into plants. He’s quite interested in the process, having recently seen the peas grow from little balls into proper plants.
He helped me choose which seeds to plant, poke the holes and he carefully dropped seeds into the holes and helped me “put them to sleep” by covering them with dirt. We talked about what each seed would become and what it would produce, the tomato plants would grow little tomatoes to put in salad, the peas would grow some yummy peas for our supper, etc.
While I was watering, he took off and a minute later came back with a handful of marbles. “I gonna plant my marble seeds.” He informed me. We did talk about how marbles aren’t alive, but he planted one anyway . . . just in case. He covered it up and watered it carefully.
It’s now been about three weeks since we planted. The peas are growing like weeds, the tomatoes are coming up . . . well, everywhere. We planted in a line, but I guess Dorian still had some seeds stuck to his hands as he brushed the dirt off, because there are literally tomatoes popping up all over the place! Our red amaranth has made an appearance and our Chinese cabbages are growing nicely, too. THe only things that haven’t showed their faces yet are the basil and chives. And, of course, the marble.
