Attack of the Picky Eater

Dorian used to eat anything and everything.
He started at four months, chowing down on mushed banana and mashed potatoes and quickly moving on to real food. By six months, he was scooting over to dig pieces of bread out of the bag and by eight months, he was completely unstoppable, wanting whatever he saw us eating.
That phase, I´m sorry to say, has ended.
Now, we have a classic picky eater. The little boy who ate half a litre of peach yogurt in one sitting last week suddenly cannot tolerate the taste, smell or even SIGHT of yogurt! He turns his head, pushes the spoon away and says, “No.” very firmly.
Avocados, papaya and chicken have gone the way of yogurt this week, as well. It leaves me wondering what to make for meals. I know you aren´t supposed to coddle kids in their weird eating habits, but I do want him to eat something.
After many a mealtime battle, I decided to no longer give in. I´m going to be strong and have even made up a proper schedule. In fact, I have decided that if he doesn´t eat what is made for each meal, he has to wait until the next. There are three meals and two snacks a day. No more grazing 24-7. Gulp.
As you can imagine, this has led to a few grumps about food, although I have only been doing this for two days. But it seems to be working. Dorian will skip breakfast, but eat very well for the remaining meals of the day. Yogurt is still completely out, but he will happily spoon down half an acorn squash for lunch and eat a half cup of raisins for his snack.
So, as much as I hate to be the bad guy, sometimes it works. I´m sure we haven´t had the last of the picky eater fights, though.
