Beds, New Words And Other Odds and Ends

Dorian`s new bed arrived a few days ago! It`s custom made which sounds all snobby and stuff, but the truth is, having the bed custom built costs about a third of the price of a storebought bed here . . . plus I get to design it to fit into MY house.

Dorian is in love with this sucker. It has two huge drawers underneath for storing toys and things. The idea is to get another one for Dante once he moves into a bed . . . but truthfully, I don`t know how on earth we`re going to fit two huge beds in that tiny room!

New words abound around here. This morning, Dorian called me into his room and said, “Oh, no! I`m SOAKING wet!” Not just wet, mind you, but “soaking” wet. :)

Dante`s latest is saying “whadayadoin?” which actually means “What are you doing?” It`s not only his first sentence (sort of), it`s also the most he`s said yet in English!

Dorian has been saying a lot in English lately and he`s really amping up his vocabulary and how he puts it together. Now when he wants something he`ll say, “Mama, I need my pacha.” Then he`ll look around and say, “Oh, no! It`s GONE! My pacha is gone! It`s LOST!” And of course Mama is the only person who can find the missing item. :)

Dorian has also been getting into scolding his brother more. Particularly for the terrible transgressions of sitting on Dorian`s chair at the dinner table or standing in front of the television and blocking Dorian`s view. The usual lines? “Dante, I`ve had it with you! Sleepies, NOW!” However, he`s equally effusive when his brother does something good like use his spoon to eat with instead of his hands, “Oh, excellent, Dante. Good job! Using your spoon, very good!” He even extends this to me . . . I picked up some spilled strawberries the other day and he told me, “Excellent, good job, Mama.”

Another Dante word is “isty” which we THOUGHT was the word “este” or “this” in Spanish. But no. Turns out he`s saying “itchy”. Poor kid. His allergies to bug bites just don`t quit and he frequently ends up with huge welts on his legs and arms and tummy from flea or mosquito bites. We`re talking HUGE. I feel so bad for him. He has to take an antihistamine every morning and evening just to keep them to a bearable level. I`m so hoping this doesn`t mean he`s going to be allergic to other things in life!

Oh, your poor little boy. Just looking at him makes me itchy. I think the mosquitos in different places make you itch more. When I was in India this summer, I got these huge bites.

Oh, poor boy with those bug bites!

Have you thought to do bunk beds for your boys (when the little one gets a “big boy” bed)? Our bedrooms are small, too, and I’ll be getting bunk beds to save space. (With a side rail for the top bunk, to be sure!)

I have thought about bunk beds, but to tell you the truth, they scare the heck out of me. When I was little, we were playing with a friend on her upper bunk (with side rail) and she tumbled off and broke her neck. It was very frightening. She survived and miraculously isn`t paralyzed, but she had some heavy duty recovery time in there.

that picture is heartbreaking! Poor dante!
The bed is awesome, i love watching how the room comes together…it looks so nice against that cool wall! I love the drawers!

I managed to survive bunkbeds, but yea… it is a wonder. I can remember being startled out of a deep sleep once and falling straight to the floor… not broken, but hurt… how much experience with the top bunk… well, I was in the Army…

Poor Dante! My daughter used to get welted up like that. Bad enough that she ended up seeing a doctor more than once.. we were ’sure’ they were bug bites, but they’d get so bad that we’d doubt it! The past year or so (4-5yrs old) she’s not had the same trouble.

?Whadayadoin?? I didn’t know you were living in Jersey!

I hope Dante grows out of the allergic reaction to the bug bites.

LOL! Dennis, I hadn`t realized that, but you`re right, I`m raising a New Joysey boy. ;)

oh wow, poor little one with his bug bites! My friend that went to Huehue came back all bitten up like that-but she scratched them and got them infected. Just make sure Dante doesn’t scratch them too much and get them infected-maybe hubbys family knows a homemade recipe for some bug protection or something to soothe the itch? Jose told me his mom would get something over there from the curandera for bad bug bites like that when they were little. I am loving that bed! I agree, custom made over there is much cheaper than paying for it in Hiper Paiz or a furniture store. I wish it was like that over here, because the ones you get in the stores can be so darn flimsy. This one will last a long, long time. Have a wonderful weekend-long holiday weekend here (no work Monday!) so am getting cleaning done. :( Sent Jose to his sister in RI, he will be coming back with tamales and chile rellenos and pan dulce from the panaderia… mmmm…
