Bronchitis is in the House!

So we took Dante to the doctor today, since he has been very sick lately. It started off as a simple cold, but it just keeps getting worse!

The thing with doctors here in Guatemala is that they almost never do the appointment thing. This is good if you have an emergency, you just head to the doctor. But it also means sitting around as the whole thing is on a first come, first serve basis.

Today, we were not first. In fact, we were fourth. Which meant we sat there for nearly 3 hours! It was awful. Dante was coughing up a lung and crying, Dorian wanted to play outside in traffic and had a major tantrum when he wasn´t allowed to commit suicide . . . it was a nightmare. Not to mention we hadn´t eaten lunch because we were in a hurry to get there!

This doctor is absolutely wonderful. I discovered him through a Guatemalan friend, before I got pregnant with Dorian. In fact, he´s the reason Dorian and Dante are here. I had three miscarriages in the span of a year and a bit and had given up on the idea of having babies. But I had a recurrent kidney infection that no one thought was very serious . . . until this guy. Instead of just handing me a prescription for more antibiotics, like every other doctor in the previous 2 years, he ordered a urine culture and it turned out that I had an E. coli infection in my kidneys that had been there for the whole 2 years, wreaking havoc on my body.

Well, the infection was now resistant to every antibiotic in the book, except three. One was oral, the other two required hospitalization! I took two different oral treatments for a total of 40 days and finally got that cleared up. He also told me that my miscarriages were not caused by my divided uterus, but possibly by the infection. And he was right! I got pregnant with Dorian about five minutes after I was cured and you all know how that turned out!

But, I digress. This doctor is absolutely wonderful, he doesn´t tell me stupid Guatemalan stuff like “You shouldn´t bathe a baby with a cold”. He´s very down to earth and treats us like human beings who actually know something, unlike other doctors. Oh, and he only charges Q50, when everyone else charges minimum of Q100!

Needless to say, this guy is in big demand. And since he doesn´t rush you out of his office, the waiting room fills up fast. Like I said, we waited nearly three hours!

In the end, we got in, explained the problem and he checked Dante over and told us that he had bronchitis. He gave us some medicine to relieve the symptoms and a prescription for antibiotics. It has been a very unpleasant day, but at least we finally know what is wrong (I knew it was worse than a simple cold!) and have the means to fix it!

Thanks, Jean! That came at a very good time, I´m sitting here at 4 am with a sick baby, a crying toddler and feeling really down. It´s nice to know that something I do is appreciated.

I don’t know how you manage it all. Know that some of us are rooting for you. Even if we can’t physically help you, you’re not completely alone.

I don´t know that I´m managing it too well. :P There are times I feel completely and utterly overwhelmed (but then, don´t we all?) Your support is really appreciated, thanks!
