Bugs in the Tummy

The boys had giardia last week, which resulted in plenty of gas and tummy upsets. We finally had to get some tests done (I’ll be doing a post on that in the near future for the expats living here) and then hit the pharmacia for medicine.

The medicine to kill giardia is nasty. It tastes horrible. I wasn’t worried about Dorian because he has never had a problem with any medicine except milk of magnesia, Dante is another story. However, to my surprise, both kids spewed their 85Q medicine all over shirts and floor and told me very clearly that it was “disgusting”. Since most of the medicine was already gone and there was NO WAY they were touching another drop, I had to get creative.

We’d bought some of the same stuff in pill form for us adults, so after a very careful dosis calculation, it was determined that half an adult pill made up the right dose for a child. I smushed the halves and mixed them into jam. It took four spoonfuls of jam to get one half of an extremely bitter pill down. I told the boys that they had bugs in their tummies and that’s why they needed to eat up and they did.

The next day, Dorian had a rather juicy burp come up. Shocked, he slapped one hand over his mouth and the other over his stomach and stared at me. When he could speak he said, “Oh no. There’s so many bugs in my tummy they’re coming back out!”

    We had a Water Supply issue a few years back, when Giardia AND Cryptospordium were both found… It took them ages to get rid of it and supply a ‘clean’ water, so I feel your pain with the boys having it…

    I loved this line as well…

    Hope they are on the mend, and did you stay clear of it as well, or did you sucumb to it??

    The boys are fine now, though Dor has a cold. Irving and I seem to have avoided the giardia though, thank goodness!
