Cake and Tools

This morning, the boys got up and were thrilled to find balloons tied to Dante`s chair. Dorian is now at the age where he gets the idea of birthdays (though he thinks he should have one today, too!), so he started to sing happy birthday to Dante. :) It was adorable.

The cake is a bit wonky. The first set of cakes came out perfectly, but I ran out of flour on the second, which meant the cakes were crumbly. I tried to ice them last night and they just started to fall apart, so the icing ended up drying in a very textured pattern, which was evident even under the fondant that I put over it.

Dante loved it anyway.

He got to open his gifts early in the morning . . . he got nails, screws, bolts with nuts, a wrench, a rubber hammer, a little trowel and two screwdrivers, plus a piece of wood to hammer. (my camera is acting up for some reason, there are dark spots on some photos).

However, the hammer was used for evil purposes by his big brother who was a little jealous of all the attention Dante was getting.

And one last shot of my birthday boy . . . with his scrunchy face!

Happy Birthday big boy Dante!! The cake is wonderful… lumps… pfft! I could never touch that :D I think it’s beautiful. I know… you’re good at cakes and are allowed to scrutinize the imperfections, but you impressed the heck out of me :) Great idea for a gift too.

Thanks, Connie. I compare them to my mom`s cakes, which are totally awesome, and my sister also makes amazing wedding cakes, so I`m never satisfied. :) I expect I`ll get better with practice, though.

Oh, girl, stop criticizing that cake! It’s amazing! I can’t believe you made it look so accurate! Very impressive. :)

Happy Birthday, Dante! Now you’re a Terrible Two, give your mama hell from me cos you’d get away with it. It’s the Two rule. :D I haven’t seen Wall-E yet so no idea who this cake is supposed to be, but heck, I’d still eat it! :D

Those are every bit as good as moms cakes! I just came across a couple pictures the other day of our old birthday cakes…the ballet slippers and the cupcake caterpillar. Those were totally what made the birthday special and if I recall…mom never was completly happy with any one of them either.
