Child Psychology 101

So you know how in movies they always have the kid drawing something strange and disturbed when there`s a problem? Like in The Ring, the little boy draws billions of black circles. In Supernatural, they`ve used this technique a few times, the kid draws bizarre things that relate to a murder, etc.
Yesterday, Dorian wanted me to “help” him draw. I did some stick figures and he happily filled them in with faces. Most of them got a double slash nose (apparently he draws nostrils instead of the nose as a whole . . . from his perspective I`m sure we all look like we have just two face holes!), eyes and some hair and a big ear to ear grin. After a few practice starts, he decided he wanted to draw the whole family. Here we are:

Let`s go right to left. On the very end, we have Dante, with his obviously curly and crazy hair. Under that slash of crayon, he has a big huge grin.
Next up is Dorian. I asked what he was doing when he scribbled over the face and he said, “That`s hair in Dorian`s face!” Hmmm, yet he refuses a haircut . . . Anyway, he`s also grinning under all that hair.
Next, Papa. Who is also in need of a haircut, as you can see. Papa is super super happy and has no nose. Which is appropriate considering his amazing inability to smell dirty diapers until after the fact.
And finally, we have Mama. Note that I have really nice hair in this photo, heavy eyebrows and . . . no smile. Nope. That is a very stern looking mouth and as he drew it (albeit BEFORE he drew the rest of the family) he said, “Here`s Mama. Mama`s sad.”
I guess someone`s been noticing how stressed out I`ve been!

Talk to Me, People!

One thing I like about little kids’ drawings of people is the levitating arch of hair encircling the top of the round head. Don’t know why, but I really adore that! It’s not easy getting the child to bring the hair down on to the head… but I see Dorian managed to attach some of the hair, all over the place, but actually touching the head.
It’s good to let kids draw and create. Good when they have help, but it’s fun to see what they come up with too.
This is so cool! I can’t wait until my little booger actually has a purpose behind her scribbles.
Connie, I thought it was interesting that Dorian did the different styles of hair, too. In the two people that I didn´t show, he had one with a couple of spikes off the top of the head and the other had longer scribbly hair. I also love how he narrates during the entire process, I should get a video of it!
Adina, shouldn´t be long now! And then when she starts drawing amazing pics, you´ll be all sad for those scribble days.
Awwwww, that’s sweet and sad at the same time.
Grant always draws nostrils rather than noses, too. I think you’re right, it’s what they see when they look at people!
They are so cute… Sad face?? Or is it a Thinking face?? I think it is the later, thinking about WHAT job you are going to tackle next!!!
