Dante´s New Attitude

Posted on October 14, 2007 - Filed Under Kids |

Dante was a very calm, relaxed baby, unlike his big brother who basically screamed his way through infanthood. Of course, Dorian had a tough start, what with hospitals and surgeries and all. And I was SO glad that Dante was much more laid back. However, now that he is about to turn 5 months . . . something has changed.

It all began three days ago. It´s like he realized that he can do a lot more than he has been. And that he can make us do stuff, too. So he started to scream. Not cry, but scream and yell. He starts off fussing and staring at you. When you look at him, he will arch his back and hold up his arms to be picked up. If you don´t pick him up, he actually SCREAMS at you, with a very angry little face!

This isn´t the only change. He used to fall asleep at the drop of a hat and now suddenly, he doesn´t want to miss anything and refuses to sleep until he is so tired that he is literally sobbing with his eyes closed. It´s a bit ridiculous, really and he´s kind of young to let him cry it out.

The final thing that Dante has realized is that revenge is sweet. From the time he came home from the hospital, he has been pinched, scratched, hit and bitten by his big brother . . . among kisses and tickles, of course. And now that he has two sharp little teeth of his own, he has figured out that he can bite back.

In fact, the other day, Dorian was bugging him, and Dante grabbed his hand and bit it. Then he LAUGHED when Dorian yelled. It can´t have hurt that bad, he only has the bottom teeth, but Dorian was pretty surprised that his brother was fighting back. And it didn´t end there! Next came hair pulling, something Dante can´t have done to him because he is pretty much bald, but he thoroughly enjoyed pulling Dorian´s. Dorian hit him and Dante screeched at him and hit back and scratched Dorian´s face. I think it would have turned into a full-blown baby fight if I hadn´t intervened!

So, now my sweet, innocent baby is becoming a little scrapper, before he can even sit up for more than 60 seconds on his own . . . I can already see the two of them tearing each other to bits in the near future. And unfortunately, I think Dante will have the advantage because Dorian is a very light little kid and Dante already weighs nearly as much as him and is a hefty little fellow, pure meat. So in about a year, they will probably be the same size, with Dante being heavier and able to just knock Dorian right over. It should be fun. :D

How do you handle sibling rivalry in your family? Anyone else have fighting babies?

Luckily my guys are far enough apart that I don’t have to deal with this one. Grayson is so much bigger it would almost be like child abuse for him to hurt his little brother. If Grant does something to deliberately hurt him, though, we intervene.
