Don`t Give the Kid Candy Before Bed!

Posted on July 10, 2008 - Filed Under Kids |

Warning, this is a bit of a rant.
Lately we`ve been having a serious problem with the in-laws.

They give Dorian candy. All. The. Time. It`s driving me insane. I can`t exactly lock him up in the house so he can`t traipse to their house and I`ve tried talking to them about it various times, but it never fails that he comes running into the house, holding up his latest sweet and yelling, “Look what I got! CANDY!”

There are two HUGE reasons not to give him candy.
1. With his medical issues, sugar is very bad for him and causes severe constipation that ends up needing an enema to dislodge. :( Definitely not nice. Because of this, I really do try to limit his sugar intake, but my father-in-law insists that Dorian is a kid and kids need candy. Argh!!

2. The last few times, Dorian has come home right before bedtime with candy. Usually a sucker or other hard candy that takes FOREVER to eat. And I`m there, itching to put him to bed and he flips out if I go near the candy. It`s very annoying. Not to mention, it probably boosts his energy levels and could explain how he manages to stay up playing half the night.

And then there is the tooth decay factor. In short, I`m not impressed. I could keep Dorian shut up in the house in the evenings to prevent the late candy thing, but I can`t do that all day and since the in-laws home is just a short jaunt away, on the same property, it would be pretty hard to limit his forays. The other option that I`ve come up with is not working and just spending all the time with him to ensure they don`t have a chance to give him anything.

Why are people so dense? I just don`t understand why it is so difficult for them to understand that if they break our rules, Dorian will suffer for it! Who wants a little kid to have regular enemas? Not me, that`s for sure. Maybe next time I should tell them that they have to do it!

I feel your pain, but in a different way. When Grayson was smaller, my in-laws used to feed him SO much fruit, that he would have diarhhea for two days after he came home. Really. They would feed him no protein or anything, just fruit all.day. If you really want tmi, he would actually poop straight fruit bits all the next day. I finally made Jeff talk to them about it.

Wow, that would be awful! I take it they listened to Jeff, though?

Thank heavens my in-laws are far, far away from us! hee hee

When we go to their place for visit, though, my MIL would always consult me what to give to my daughter. The eye darts I give her truly helps.

Grace, you are too funny! Eye darts. I love it!
