Dorian´s Nightmare

Posted on September 12, 2007 - Filed Under Kids |

You know how they say kids can´t have nightmares until they´re something like 2? Well, that´s hogwash. Dorian has been having them lately.

These bad dreams seem to have started a few days ago. Irving was away and I woke up to Dorian SCREAMING, not crying like he normally does when he wakes up wet or wanting a drink. When I went in, he was standing in his crib screaming at the door. I walked in and he continued to stare at the door and sob uncontrollably. I calmed him down and cuddled him and he went back to sleep without a problem and we had no more issues until last night.

Irving and I were jerked out of bed by Dorian crying and carrying on in the other room and screeching, “DANTE! DANTE!” When Irving went in, the poor kid was yelling for Dante and crying. This wasn´t his normal crying, he was scared.

Irving calmed him down, told him that Dante was fine and got him back down with a bottle of water and he went back to sleep. Since he´s not really old enough to talk about what is going on in his dreams, it´s hard to know exactly what is going on, but one thing is for sure, he´s not exempt from nightmares because of his age!

When Dorian was little, he used to wake up crying like that for a couple of months after each of his surgeries. I felt so bad that we had caused the trauma that he was dreaming about, but it had to be done. But these new nightmares . . . who knows where they are coming from? And since I still have dreams that make me scream and scare me half to death from time to time, I can totally sympathize with Dorian.

Anyone else have experience with toddlers and nightmares? Any suggestions?
