Dorian Bounces Back

I realized today, after about three emails asking me how Dorian was doing that maybe I should think about actually updating my blog! :P Things have been extremely hectic with work, as I have taken on a couple of new clients that ended up sending me WAY more work than I had anticipated. Which is great, but it means I don’t have much time for other stuff, like telling you all that my kid is fine. Oops.

So, Dorian got his tests back and he didn´t have anything like rotovirus, etc. but he did have . . . a bacterial infection of the intestines, parasites, and something I can’t remember the name of but it distills down to flagellated protozoa (remember those suckers from high school biology?). Now, apparently, the protozoa wouldn’t normally cause problems, something like 10% of people have them. However . . . it looks like the combination of bacterial infection and parasites caused his intestines to just stop moving stuff through, though he didn’t have much buildup, oddly enough.

When we gave him the enema, we stirred up all those nasty critters, who got mad and promptly made him sick. :( So that was definitely not good, though a necessary step. I´m thinking next time we’ll do the tests first, kill everything and THEN flush them all out. Or just stay on top of it with monthly tests for everyone in the family.

He was horribly ill that night, puking over and over, he couldn´t even keep his medicine down. We put him on the couch to sleep and I settled in to work in the living room while he slept. At 11 pm, he popped up all chipper, with his color back and asked to watch Transformers. Pretty soon he was sipping ginger ale, eating crackers and exclaiming over how late it was and how dark it was outside and how cool that he was still up! :) And that was the end of that.

At any rate, the little guy is zipping around like nothing ever happened. Today he jumped off the couch in a fit of overexcitement and twisted his ankle for the first time in his life. As I examined it, he looked up at me with tears in his eyes and asked, “Is it broken?” in a very sad, small voice. You see, broken things around here get tossed in the garbage, so I think he thought we might throw his cute little foot out! But he was off running around pretty quick after that.

Dante, on the other hand, is having fits of jealousy. He was quite upset that his brother got to go to the doctor while he was left with the maid. And now, Dorian gets medicine . . . there is just no END to the misery. Poor kid. We’re trying to compensate by giving him extra stories and hugs.

Glad to hear he is feeling better!! How scary! At least he is old enough to understand why all this is going on. We dealt with Dante’s type of jealously when our kids were small by enlisting the healthy sibling as ‘doctor’, and he/she would help with medicine, or getting a cold cloth, or something to help the other.

I like the doctor idea! We’ll have to try that, poor Dante feels very left out when these things happen . . . so much activity around his brother and he kind of gets left by the wayside. :(

Wow, Connie’s method is very creative. Something to take note when I have little terrors of my own. :) I’m glad Dorian is feeling much better.

Connie has TONS of great ideas about raising kids, I think she should write a book, actually. :D
