Gifts from the North . . . ish

So, I JUST wrote about not being able to get packages and then, less than 24 hours later, I got a parcel card in the mail to go pick up a package at the post office. Off I went with Irving to do a bit of food shopping and pick up the parcel.

To my surprise, it wasn’t a Wii control or Lego kits . . .

But pumpkins from Jimmy and Shelley in Peten! They’d told me I’d be getting some, but these came so fast and I didn’t expect them to arrive in the post office that it was a nice surprise!

As soon as I got home, the boys went nuts over the pumpkins. Dante examined each one carefully and asked, “Where are their faces? Where are the eyes?” :) He’s only seen pumpkins in pictures of jack-o-lanterns!

Dorian was desperate to eat one and would have just bit into the littlest if I hadn’t told them they need to be cooked. But first, I wanted to take some pictures! So I did that and we now have some very fall-ish photos for the album. Next up, pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie!

Oh, and I did let the kids draw faces on the pumpkins after the photo shoot. ;)

Thanks, Jimmy and Shelley!

Those are awesome! I will be leaving for the US tomorrow and will be back in a few weeks. Will bring you some seeds for your garden from back home.

Aww… thanks for posting pictures! These are from heirloom seeds so you can try saving them and planting them. You might have better luck in your climate. Next year we will have to try carving a couple.

I’d already planned to try planting them, Shelley! As long as they don’t get flooded, I expect they’ll do fine.

That would be awesome, Trudy! I just planted my first plot today, eggplants, cucumbers, pak choy, Chinese cabbage and cauliflower!

So these were “born and raised” in Peten? INcredible!!!
Jim and Shelley (or maybe you, Genesis) need to get a pumpkin farm going. Have you seen the price of these at the supermarket??? They’re like Q10 per POUND!!!

Actually, I’ve never seen real pumpkins here, though I’ve heard they have them in Hiperpais. We need warmer weather to grow these things though! I think Peten is probably perfect when there are no hurricanes. :)
