Going Backwards

Dante took forever to start talking, as I think many second borns do. He spent his first couple of years grunting and pointing and totally uninterested in using words. Then he had a word explosion about 6 months ago and started speaking in sort of sentences and explaining things to us.

It was great, I loved it! And then something happened . . . he started going backwards.

Dante spoke fairly clearly at first, but now he’s been shortening everything and slurring his words together. The other day, he asked me for “beh uny?” I could NOT figure it out . . . but Dorian came to my rescue. “He wants bread and honey.” In fact, Dorian has been doing a lot of translating lately since Dante seems to be talking more and becoming more difficult to understand at the same time! If you don’t get what he says, he’ll usually repeat himself once, very loudly, then he throws whatever he has in his hands and screams because you don’t understand him. He seems to think it’s a personal attack, that we aren’t listening to him at all .  . but really, we just can’t understand what he says!

As his mom, I understand a chunk of what Dante says, but I can’t help wondering about other people. If I only get 50%, how much is getting through to his aunts and uncles, for example?

Oh well. He can’t talk this way forever, right? :)

    Don’t bet on it!!!

My nephew William was EXACTLY like this and Max had to tell his parents (and me as well) what it was Willie was saying. This was right up until he had gromets in his ears and after that small surgery, even in the car on the way home that very day, he asked why is everything so loud/noisey!!!

I hope this is not the case with Dante! He is way cute in this photo to by the way!!

Hmm, I think a trip to the doctor is in order then, Bernie. Thanks for sharing that! It did cross my mind that there could be something wrong, but he did enunciate fairly well until a couple of months ago.
