Got $3.50? Feed a Family!

There are so many projects here in Guatemala and thanks to more than one dose of reality, I`m generally pretty cynical about them. However. There is one that I definitely am interested in, Mayan Families. They have a lot of different programs, including sponsorship and I can tell you that the prices they quote are not inflated like many programs. They ask for $150 a year per child to send them to school, which includes shoes, a backpack and some other items, to make studying easier. That amount is EASILY how much it costs a family to send one child to school here . . . if not more for special occasions. Another reason I trust them is because I recently met a blog reader who frequently volunteers with them.
One project that they have, which I really love, is Clucks for Bucks. This is a program designed to help families help themselves, which is always a better idea than just giving them everything! Basically, you donate $3.50 and that pays for a chicken for a family. They can raise it and eat the eggs or sell them and later, kill the chicken for meat. It`s an opportunity for them to provide food for their family and possibly earn a little extra income, which is, of course, very useful for a family that only earns a few dollars a day.
Right now, they are doing a Clucks for Bucks drive through the month of May and I thought it would be fun to see if my blog readers would be interested in donating for this. They have plenty of other options, you can also buy a stove, water filter, or beds for families, but this project is particularly useful, I think.
So, what do you say? Do you have $3.50 to spare? If you do decide to donate, you can let me know and I`ll keep a running total of donated chickens on the sidebar. You can leave a comment, or if you prefer to stay anonymous, let me know in an email at freelanceprowriter AT gmail.com.
PS. To make this even more interesting, I`ll match the donations coming in up to 20 chickens.

Talk to Me, People!

I want to donate. How do I do it?
sorry, duh, saw the link. i will do that
Thanks, Kathleen! Make sure you let me know how many chickens you donated so I can add them (and match) on the blinkie!
Since I came into inheritance very recently (you’ll understand later on) I might as well hop in and buy a chicken for them. Cos you know, I’m a millionaire and one chicken is no biggie for me.
BUT I went to the site and they had this field for all sort of stuffs: General, Education, Community Aid etc…
I’m thinking maybe community aid since it does mention ‘chicken’ on it, but I’m double checking with you. Yeah, I’m a bimbo millionaire. I know.
Genesis, Thanks so much for mentioning the chicken program of Mayan Families! We were in Panajachel last fall helping to give out chickens with Becky Hilfer (creator of the ‘Bucks for Clucks’ program) and it was a blast! It was wonderful to see the women so happy and grateful for the chickens. To donate on the Mayan Familes web site, it is the community aid program, and there is a place to make a note that it is for the chicken program. They generally try to give 10 chickens and a bag of feed to each family.
For those that want to know more of the details in the background of Mayan Families, there is a yahoo group “Mayan Families Connection”, where you can read about the latest projects and activites. Thanks again!
Ok, 2 chickens on the way for them.
I realize they need 10 per family but hey, with my 2, now they only need 8 more.
This has been fun!
Yay! Thanks Gloria. Every bit helps.
