Happy Thanksgiving

It doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving today. Canadians usually have it on Sunday, but yesterday we were on the phone and waiting to hear about Sofia, to see if the hospital would release her body or not. They did. My in-laws went to see her in the morgue and they said she was beautiful. The nurses had laid her on her side so that her good side was up and she looked like any other baby, fast asleep. We didn’t go, of course. Not just because of the kids, but because there is a superstition here that a pregnant woman shouldn’t see a dead baby and quite frankly, I’m willing to go with that one.

Irving went to Mass for Sofia and then to the cemetery. I didn’t go for a few reasons. First, the boys were insanely overtired and grumpy and I knew they couldn’t sit still during Mass and at the cemetery, they would be fighting and yelling, which is not appropriate, of course. It was also raining and the kids have colds and on top of that, I wasn’t sure how the mourning parents would feel having a pregnant woman at the burial. So I sent them my condolences and will send some cinnamon rolls a little later on. It doesn’t feel like enough.

Anyway. Back to Thanksgiving. I have work today. A LOT of work. So no Thanksgiving dinner. :( I’m also feeling very blah right now and the nausea keeps kicking back up and I just don’t feel like celebrating anything right now. The boys don’t eat anything but cereal and tortillas with beans these days anyway, so there’s virtually no point in cooking and until late last night, we thought Irving wouldn’t be here anyway, so there are 0 ingredients for a good dinner in the house. Oh, and, the power went out a lot yesterday and fried the water pump for the entire town, so we also have had no water since yesterday, which means it’s hard to wash dishes . . . you get the point.

Maybe this is a sign we SHOULD be celebrating and being thankful. But I just can’t get up the energy to do it, not when I have a dozen articles waiting to be written and clients needing responses. So we declared today a holiday with nothing in it and I’m working.

However, I am thankful for stuff still:

- Healthy (relatively speaking) kids and a baby that’s developing well

- Being home, even if the electricity and water aren’t working properly

- Having a flexible job so I can literally lie in bed and work when I feel this icky

- Fans, without which, I would seriously die in this heat and with the flies

- For picky kids who will be happier with tortillas and beans than a full turkey dinner. :P Yes, I’m trying to look on the bright side, even though I do love turkey.
