How Hard Can It Be to Buy a Kitchen Table?

Posted on January 20, 2008 - Filed Under Mom Stuff |

Apparently, harder than I thought. We are going on 3 years now without a table. The first 2.5 years were mainly because we didn´t have a house to put the table in . . . just our bedroom which was also our living room/dining room/rec room/kitchen.

Now, we have a place to put the table and I can´t find one! First we went to a store where I´ve drooled for months over the gorgeous pine and cedar tables. They had some really nice metalwork ones, too. We headed there before Christmas and guess what? They were out. We returned in January . . . they had tables. But they were glass topped. Do you think it´s a good idea to have a glass topped table kitchen table with a two-year old who has a penchant for smashing and throwing things? No, neither do I, so we didn´t get those tables.

We also travelled to the capital to look at tables in the department stores there. I found one that I loved, but it was SUPER expensive. As in, we paid the same amount to build the kitchen! Then I saw it. The perfect table. Wood. Rectangular. Four chairs. (ok, by this time, I really wasn´t very picky, those were my three pre-requisites) I told Irving, “This is it. This is my table.” and so we snagged a salesman and told him we would take it.

The salesman vanished for about half an hour. During this time, Dorian got a tad hypoglycemic and threw a fit. We´d forgotten his bottle in the car. Dante started crying because his brother was crying. We made a hasty exit to the food court next door and bought an orange juice and cookie for Dorian. Dante had a little taste of orange juice and then we headed back, relieved to see the salesman had returned from the nether regions of the store.

But the news was bad. The table, MY table, was sold out! The only one was the display version, which I would have gladly taken, just to be out of the whole table-shopping mode. But no, it was not to be. They don´t sell display models, apparently. So, we returned home table-less and because of this tragedy, I´m still picking chow mein noodles off my bedroom floor, nispero peels off the living room floor and mopping spilled coffee off the couch because a certain little toddler thinks it´s fun to run through the house with a cup of coffee in one hand and a bowl of noodles in the other!

Aww, that’s too bad. Hmm…consider that it’s not your soultable yet, and nature is doing it’s job by not letting you have what will not suit you. Sounds crazy, but at least it’s reassuring to know that out there, there will be a perfect table for you. ;)

We’re sort of the same way with a coffee table for our den (not as important as a kitchen table, I know). Pier1 manufactured the armoire in there, and they have quit making the table we want. The only place I can find one now is a Mexican import place online, and it too expensive. ugh. I wish I could build things like that.
Oh, and are you telling me that Dorian drinks coffee? Like, real coffee?
