Imagination from Sun Up to Sun Down

When I was growing up, we didn’t have television, just a lot of books and the great outdoors. My boys are allowed to watch TV and truth be told, we don’t really limit their time. That doesn’t matter though, because they don’t watch an awful lot anyway. What they do is watch a favorite movie and then they head outside to play it.

They often wake up in the morning with ideas already in their touseled little heads! Yesterday, I was working away and they both got up and came bouncing in, Dorian calling to Dante to watch his head going into the cave (apparently my room was the cave). They found the headlamp that a blog reader  gave us and which I use when I get up at 2 in the morning to work and promptly decided it was time for a trip to “the center of the earth”.

Brendon Fraser is their all time favorite actor and they call him John because that’s his name in the Mummy series. They also call the headlamp “john”. And, since “John” uses a headlamp in the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, they quickly fell to exploring the mysteries of our cave room with the lamp.

Sadly, my intrepid explorers didn’t make it out of the center of the earth before the lava caught up to them.

Evening usually finds them just as active, though outdoors. As the sun dips behind the volcanoes, it gets cooler rapidly and they abandon the leftover heat of the house to run around barefoot outside (much to my in-laws’ dismay). They are often truck drivers at night, racing their Tonkas back and forth, or flopping on them to roll down our little hill at the entrance.

As it gets dark, I call them in for bed and they come tumbling in, often so dirty a second bath is needed (we do one in the heat of the day, too), faces glowing and eyes bright with the excitement of whatever game they were playing. Once in bed, they fall asleep within minutes, they’ve worn themselves out completely!

(if you’re wondering why my kids have no sheets it’s because they rip them off the bed every night. Don’t ask me why, they don’t like sheets. Or pillowcases. :S)

Oh, I love brothers! Aren’t we blessed to have not one, but two little boys? Do yours get louder and louder the more intense the storyline? Mine do. It sometimes makes me insane, but at the same time, I am so thankful they have one another. Thanks for posting this; it made me smile!

Oh, yes, they get very loud! Especially when the lava is rising or the dinosaurs are attacking. There are shrieks and yells to get under cover . . . but I have to smile. I love seeing them play together. Your kids, Jess, are super creative and imaginative, too! That Ewok village was awesome!

Monk, the sleeping pics are from a while back, as you can see from the length of their hair. I just thought it was hilarious how Dorian lines all his cars up and then goes to sleep. At least he never falls out of bed because a car falling will wake him up first. :D
