Isn´t This Supposed to Be a Tropical Country?

Posted on June 2, 2008 - Filed Under Guatemala |

It´s 15º. That´s on the chilly side, even by Canadian standards. Heck, we used to turn on the heat at 16º minimum!

They say Guatemala is the “Land of Eternal Spring” which sounds awfully nice in theory, but in reality . . . not so much. See, they neglect to mention in the guidebook that no one has heating in their homes here. So . . . imagine spring, with all it´s ups and downs, without heat. Add a tin roof and drafty windows and you´ve practically got yourself an ice box on a day like today!

The whole tin roof thing isn´t so hot either. Well, it is in the sun, but I´m talking about the noise. Have you ever heard a torrential downpour on a tin roof? It´s NOISY! Kind of like standing under a train station . . . with a never ending train. Ours is pretty well fastened down, but with all the wind that Alma has brought, the neighbors lost a couple of tin sheets. Ours just flaps up and down, adding a metallic thunder sound to the pounding rain.

All this noise means watching television is pretty much out of the question. Thankfully many of the shows have subtitles, but that doesn´t help Dorian who is probably the most bored of the group! Music is useless and it´s even hard to read a book to the boys! Any talking we do is just yelling at this point. Which is kind of funny when you think about it . . . and I´m sure it will be hilarious in years to come.

According to the forecast, we have two more days of this lovely weather. Then it´s back to regular rainy season days . . . sunny in the morning and rainy in the afternoon and evening. Just the way I like it!

So it gets chilly in Guatemala? Here in Panama it’s hot all year-round. Costa Rica was chilly during certain months of the year, but you just had to wear a sweater and you were fine (there’s no heating in homes there either). I saw your comment on Vered’s blog (Momgrind) and decided to stop by :-)

Now that you’ve reminded me — I used to live in the Philippines in a house with tin roof and yeah, it’s so noisy during the rainy season!! But once we got accustomed to it, we can sleep through the night, the sound almost feel like music to the ears.
