Just Go to SLEEP!
Posted on March 31, 2008 - Filed Under Kids |
If anyone knows how to make a 2 year old sleep, I would love to hear it. Dorian has been awake until midnight the past three nights. In his room, but awake and talking and playing. Nothing will get him to settle down and go to sleep and he´s up again at 6 or 7 in the morning and doesn´t nap all day long! He´s grumpy, I´m grumpy and it´s just not working.
I know a 2 year old needs more than 5 hours of sleep a day. I know I need more than 5 hours of sleep a day! But what I don´t know is WHY he won´t sleep. It´s not like he doesn´t get plenty of exercise. He is running all over the place outside all day long. Short of making him do laps . . . I really don´t know what else to do and I´m at the end of my rope.
Part of the issue for me is that I am trying to work and I can´t with a toddler screaming and having fits every five seconds and banging his head against the wall. I really feel like a lousy mom right now because my son is a total little monster! We´ve tried putting him in his room and just going in over and and over to lay him down . . . we´ve tried leaving him on his own in his room to settle by himself . . . none of it has worked. Irving says that 3 days isn´t enough to worry about, but as far as I´m concerned, it´s more than enough.
Any ideas? I think we´ll have to take him back to the doctor if this keeps up . . . maybe it´s something physical?

Speaking of terrible mothers… I have resorted to dosing Grant with Benadryl when he’s been on a tare like that. If he’s getting exercise and not drinking/eating anything with caffeine late in the afternoon, then I don’t know what else you could do. Sometimes they just get into a bad rhythm, and it will eventually work itself out, but in the meantime, a little Benadryl for a couple of nights could help you keep your sanity. Don’t send the bad mommy police after me, please!!
Jessica, I´m SO glad to hear that someone else has tried that! Unfortunately, in the past, even Benadryl hasn´t worked with Dorian. He´s extremely resistant to anything designed to calm him down! Even after a double dose of sedatives to put him to sleep for a medical exam, he only slept for 15 min. . . . a regular dose should have put him out for 3-4 HOURS! :S
I hope that he is setteling down for you now…
I use to use something (can’t recall it now darn it) with my girls (from my previous marrige) and it use to work a treat, so don’t feel bad for using the Benadryl or similar.
Have you taken him to a chemist to look at? Our chemists are really good for looking at this sort of thing…
they’re such angels when they’re sleeping. makes up for the devilish acts when they’re awake. ?
happy ww.
he looks angelic in that pic. have you tried nyquil? not sure if you can give that to kids, but it works for me on long haul flights…:-)

Thanks for visiting my blog!
I’ve read your most recent posts, too, so in no particular order:
1) My kids have gone through stages where they won’t sleep either. With both of them, it was like turning a page. One day they’d fight tooth and nail against sleep, the next I’d put them in their crib in what I thought was an exercise in futility and they’d drift happily off to sleep. I guess toddlers know no logic.
2) Bento looks very cool - but I’m just happy I’m currently in the stage of my life where the only lunch I need to pack is my own. :O)
3) And regarding your comment on my blog - we used white crayon to make marks on our Easter eggs. You just color whatever you want before dropping them in the dye!
