More Sick
Posted on October 9, 2009 - Filed Under Mom Stuff, Personal | 9 Comments
I’ve been feeling pretty yucky lately, though I did feel much better after the initial bout of being ill. Finally, yesterday, I broke down and had some tests done. Turns out that while there is no longer any sign of E. coli in specific, I have both an intestinal infection AND a UTI. Loverly.
So, I’m currently taking two different antibiotics and hopefully will be feeling better soon. I have to say, though, the 10 lb. weight loss over the past 2 weeks is almost worth being sick for!

That’s terrible! Do you eat yogurt? I hate the stuff, but it is good when your stomach is messed up and you have to take harsh antibiotics. Feel better soon!
Genesis, drink a lot of Rosa de Jamaica for your UTI. Since we don´t have cranberries in Guatemala, this is a very good substitute. With the intestinal infection, I just hope all goes well with the antibiotics.
I agree with Connie. Have some yogurt to build up your intestinal flora again. Maybe someone can give you the little “worms” to make yogurt (they´re a special strain of beneficial bacteria.)
Connie, I do eat yogurt, but haven’t lately . . . thanks for that tip! I’m going to pick some up tomorrow.
Cristina, thanks for the tip about Rosa de Jamaica! I actually found a big jug of cranberry juice at Deliciousa, but it was horribly expensive. I got it anyway and it helped, but Rosa de Jamaica is way cheaper.
I actually had a friend who made her own yogurt, using some of the stuff from the store and a thermos. I’ll have to give it a try since the boys love it, too.
I have a recipe/instructions for homemade yogurt somewhere… in a box, in a crate, in a ship… I’m sure you can find instructions on the web
I bet the homemade yogurt has more live culture and is better for you too.
What is Rosa de Jamaica?
Trust YOU to see a positive out of this!! BUT, I am glad that you’re back on the mend, and, get well soon!!!
Connie, my mom makes her own yogurt all the time, but she has an electric oven. Mine is gas, so I can’t keep it at a good temperature . . . but the way my friend did it was to put the milk and a spoonful of yogurt inside the thermos and close it, then flip the thermos over and pour hot water into the base and leave it overnight. Presto, in the morning, yogurt!
Rosa de Jamaica is hibiscus flowers. Really tasty and bright red. You can buy the powder here, or get the dried flowers and make them into tea. Hmm, I feel a few Gourmet Mama recipes coming on . . .

You might want to take lactobisilus powder available in envelopes at the pharmacy (fenix should have it). It is actual culture whereas yogurt is pasturized and doesn´t give much in the way of restoring the flora to your tum. You can disolve it in water or sprinkle it on something.
Thanks, Korey! I had no clue where to look for that, though I know you can find it in Canada. Pharmacy makes perfect sense. Thank you very much for that tip.
