Multi-tasking to the Nth Degree

Posted on January 23, 2008 - Filed Under Personal |

Lately, I´ve been kind of overloading myself. It came about by accident. We needed more money to build the bathroom, so I took on more ghostwriting jobs. Then a few more and finally, a couple more. :) Then a company that I write for contacted me, asking me to take on some articles. The pay was higher than usual and the job was interesting, so I said yes.

All this would be fine if I were childless and on my own. But I´m not. And Irving´s band has really been getting popular around here, so he is suddenly away all the time. He is literally home for one day a week at this point! Normally, he arrives between 3-6 am and is gone again by noon. It´s an exhausting lifestyle for both of us, especially after the Christmas rush. We thought January would be quiet and relaxing. haha

I think the boys realize that something is out of whack because they have both developed sleep issues. Both of them wake up in the middle of the night (but not at the same time!) and stay awake for 2-3 hours! That is really bad news when they do it back to back because I´m basically awake for 6 hours in the middle of the night. Which means, pretty much all night, since these days I don´t get to bed until around 10 or 11!

Trying to keep up with two rambunctious little guys, too much work on my plate, laundry, dishes and housekeeping means that when Irving comes home I´m in no mood for hanging out with him. I feel kind of bad because he comes home, sleeps a few hours (I usually try to keep the kids out of the bedroom until at least 9 when Dante goes down for a nap) and then I shove the boys at him and try to get some work done before he leaves again!

There has got to be a better way to deal with this, but I don´t know what it is. At the moment, I´m trying to write the blogs that I do for pay at night and then publish the posts the next morning, but to tell the truth, I´m wiped out by 7, when the kids go to bed. It´s a real struggle to stay focused on my writing until I´m done everything . . . about 3-4 hours!

Anyway. That´s why posting on this blog has become so sporadic. My brain is frazzled and most of the time I can´t think enough to actually write stuff down here! I´m hoping this won´t last too long. :P

I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you to manage a home with two little kids (and boys!) and a writing assignment. Just wondering, can you hire a maid there in Guatemala?

I hope your multi-tasking to the max doesn’t last too long and you get some real sleep soon! If we had been near, my mother (who is staying with us) can babysit the boys for you. :-)

MY goodness Genesis… That way to much to do!! You will burn out!
I would put some rags on Dante’s knees to do the sweeping, and wet them to mop the floors…
Dorian can do the washing up, with using that special eraser to rub out the ‘marks’ on the plates… You know the one that has a sponge/scrubbing end on it!! That way, SOME of the housework can get done!!! :) :) :)

Get some rest my friend, get some rest!

Grace, thanks for the offer, maybe I´ll have to move closer. :D We could hire a maid, but when we tried before every single one fell through! I just kind of gave up.

Bernie, you crack me up! I´ll let the boys know they are on housekeeping duty. :D

It’ll pass, chickadee. I know it’s SO hard when you’re in the middle of it, but just take a deep breath and prioritize. Your articles/pay blogs are important, spending time with the boys is important, having a sparkling house can wait a while. There has to be a way for you to get more sleep though. Being tired makes every problem seem huge. Maybe cutting out afternoon naps, or making sure the boys get some really rigorous activity a couple of hours before bed? And if you can’t post here for a while, don’t worry. We’ll wait for you!
