Mutant Crickets in Guatemala

Dorian called me outside to see a bug the other day and this is what I found . . .

My maid said it was a “grillo” or cricket, but it’s like no other cricket I’ve ever seen and it was at least two inches long!
It was wounded since the maid found it in the bathroom and kicked it out the door, but when we got too close, it acted rather like a scorpion!

That nasty looking thing on the back end was very hard, but when I touched it with a stick, it just stuck it up further, but didn’t try to stab me or anything. Then again, maybe it knew it was just a stick and was waiting for a tender foot or something.
I’ve seen a lot of weird bugs in Guatemala, but this is definitely up there on the bizarre list!
Update: Apparently this is a “tree weta“, which I discovered while reading Cracked.com . . . who says you learn nothing from that site?

Talk to Me, People!

definitely NOT something I would want in bed or even in the room with me! ( making a mental reminder now to check room AND bed thoroughly when visiting in a few months) Definitely a scary looking fellow… much more intimidating than the little black crickets we get here in Maine.
Wow…could it be a cicada?

Yeah God!
My first thought was that it looks like a killer locust! But Kimmie is right, the body looks very cicada-ish.. the head does not though, that’s definitely locust-y, and it does look aggressive!
I’ve never seen a cicada, actually. Guess I should look it up online.
Cool! Love the picture. I have seen such bugs around, but don’t know what they are. I have lived most of my life in Lousiana, Texas and Florida, so we get to see a great many fascinating bugs.
Greetings from Cyprus, nice photo of The Bug !
