My Latest Obsession - BENTO!
Posted on April 3, 2008 - Filed Under Food |
Ok, so I found a website on bento, the Japanese art of packing lunches, a while back and loved it. Then I stumbled across some bento accessories on ebay . . . and guess what? Shipping from Japan is the same to Guatemala as it is to the US!
So, to make a long story short, I bought some stuff and I´m attempting some fairly simple bento lunches to entice Dorian into eating a bit more. Yesterday was my first real one, for Dorian´s lunch.

Clockwise from top left: Beans in a bear shaped rice mold, cheese cubes on animal skewers, ketchup in a bear sauce container, a strawberry-banana JELLO star (made in half an egg mold), pepian beef and carrot chunks.
It was a lot of fun putting this together and Dorian loved the presentation. He really liked the fact that there were lots of different foods, too, so he could decide what to eat first (jello, then the beans and meat!). This isn´t a proper bento since it isn´t packed tightly, but since we were just eating at home, it was fine.
If you´d like to see more about bento, I highly recommend this site, which is Japanese, but she´s a pro at bento and makes the CUTEST little foods! Also, for faster bento lunches, I really like Lunch in a Box, which has toddler friendly meal ideas . . . though I have to say that this woman´s kid eats a lot more than Dorian ever would!
And, in closing, a few of the bento accessories I´ve picked up off Ebay.

I love to make those bento lunch boxes when we were in Japan. Right now, no more since I can’t buy ingredients easily here in Dubai.
