No Good Movies

We’ve been watching a variety of movies lately. Usually there are a few duds out of a bunch of new ones, but this time . . . I’ve been sorely disappointed. Most flicks have left me with the feeling that I’ve just wasted 2 hours of my life. Good thing I tend to work while watching!
Here’s a rundown on some of the more recent movies we’ve watched.
Salt: This SHOULD have been a great movie! It had Angelina Jolie who is usually in movies I like. The shorts were excellent. It’s an action movie about Russian spies. All that sounds very, very good. But somehow, the movie was a disaster.
I won’t give the movie away in case you actually want to see it, but basically, it’s like two guys were sitting around in a dark room, discussing the hottest female leads and said, “Hey, dude, you know what would be awesome? Angelina Jolie jumping across freeway lanes on the backs of big trucks.” and then, “Whoa, yeah! And . . . explosions! Lots of them!” “Let’s do it, man.”
The Last Airbender: Yet another movie that looked seriously awesome, a kid who is the last of his kind, element control and based on a hugely popular television series. Sadly, the acting was awful. Even though I really like Jackson Rathbone, even he didn’t do a good job in the movie and the plot was lacking. sigh. This is the first time I’ve had to agree with the critics on one of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. The kids like it though.
The Expendables: This could have gone either way . . . it’s a big bunch of over-the-hill actors making a sort of come-back movie. Those sometimes are awesome. Sometimes not so much. This one was not so much. It didn’t stink, and Irving assures me that it was much more acceptable to the males in the world, so maybe I’m just not getting it.
BUT . . . there is still hope! We also watched How to Train Your Dragon and I have to say, it was excellent. Very well done.
It’s a movie about a young Viking who lives in a village of dragon slayers and wants nothing more to be one himself. Unfortunately, he’s a little on the puny side. Though I think his name, Hiccup, really had a lot to do with it.
Anyway, Hiccup ends up getting his dragon, but not the way he intended. It’s a really neat movie, one that made Irving and I laugh. Apparently it was a hit with the boys, too, because Dorian is usually a dragon trainer named Hiccup these days and Dante is always a dragon. Except when he’s a monster. That breathes fire and flies . . . but is most definitely NOT a dragon, as he will vehemently correct you if you DARE to say something like, “Oh, what a cute little dragon.” Then he breathes fire on you and burns you to a crisp and laughs an evil non-dragon laugh.

Talk to Me, People!

Oh I had such great hope in the Expendables… but as someone who actually enjoyed most of the 97 minutes of Resident Evil 4 (just forget about a movie needing a plot, good acting and be high on caffeine at 10 pm), I think I will still give it a chance.
I have to admit, I’m going to watch Resident Evil 4.
I mean, Wentworth Miller is in it, no?
So I gather dragons are not evil?
This was funny to me because I have sat through many children’s movies wishing I had a flashlight and a magazine…I have to agree that How to Train your Dragon was the best we’ve seen recently. James just saw Legend of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga’Hoole with his grandmother and loved it, so your boys will probably enjoy that.
Apparently just misunderstood.
I just heard about those books, Lisa. Looking forward to seeing the movie!
Yes, he is, and him appearing in the movie made the whole ciname laugh.
Probably neither here nor there, but there is an old film my kids used to like, nevertheless: The Never Ending Story. Maybe your children are too young for that one, but keep it in mind.
I LOVED that movie when I was younger. I had a huge crush on Bastian.
No idea if I can find it here, though, maybe when we go to Canada. I think they would really enjoy it.
