No Luz, No Tele

Yesterday morning, at around 3 am, we had a blackout. Now, since it was at 3 in the morning, you´d think no one would notice, but unfortunately, Dorian had just woken up wet and so he was awake when his nightlight and fan went off. Chaos ensued.

Since he was born, Dorian has hated the dark. I´m thinking it has something to do with the fact that he spent the first 8 days of his life in a very brightly lit hospital incubator. For three of those days, they taped a blindfold over his little eyes while he received light therapy for jaundice that he developed after his surgery. When I was allowed to visit, I would take him out and uncover his eyes, and he would throw a fit (yes, his personality was THAT defined at just a few days) when I had to cover them to put him back in once my 30 minutes were up.

So, he sleeps with a nightlight and sometimes even the ceiling light on really scary nights. I don´t mind, because really, aren´t there worse things to fret about with a toddler than him sleeping with the lights on? And yesterday morning, when the power went off, he really freaked out and started to scream for us. Irving ran to get him and brought him to our bed, but once the initial fright was over, Dorian decided it was play time and ran around in the moonlit living rooms yelling, “Luna! Luna!” (moon).

That wasn´t so bad except that all that excitement woke Dante up and he had to come into bed, too. Then Dorian wanted to watch his latest obsession, Toy Story 2 and got quite upset when he realized that the television did´t work. He wandered around forlornly muttering, “No luz (light), no tele. Tele BROKE!”

Finally, after an hour of no electricity, I took Dorian to his bed and lay down with him, leaving Irving to deal with the baby. I actually slept very well in Dorian´s bed, though he stayed awake and played with my hair until the sun came up. And he didn´t have a nap until 10 am . . . his normal time! And then his nap was half the normal length. I have no idea where children get their energy from. I just drag through the day every day and envy the bounce that Dorian has. In fact, it´s getting so bad, I´m starting to wonder if there isn´t something wrong with me!
