Our Recent Nature Project

I`m a firm believer that education shouldn`t start at six or seven when a kid starts school . . . it`s an ongoing process. My boys are very interested in the outdoors at the moment, particularly in bugs and plants. So, I thought it would be fun to take advantage of that and start fostering a bit of a learning attitude in this area.
First, we made some nature books. Well, I made them and they decorated.

These are just super simple booklets, five sheets of computer paper folded in half to make 10 pages, then stapled inside a sheet of construction paper . . . the boys picked their own colors.
The idea is that when we go for walks, we take along the camera and some contact paper (clear) to capture stuff we see. The photos will be for bugs and live things that we can`t bring back, but flowers and leaves are perfect for sticking to contact paper and pressing into the book. We`ll also be doing some leaf rubbings to put in there.
Here`s the first page of Dorian`s book. It`s rather haphazard, since I let him put in most of the items.
We have yet to label them and I`ll be writing his narration of the items, as well.
