Quick and Easy Bean Bag Game for Rainy Days
Posted on July 23, 2010 - Filed Under Fun, Kids, Simple Life | 5 Comments
It’s been raining a lot lately. A LOT. Which means two little boys have been going a bit berserk in our teensy house. After about three days of almost solid rain, we were all in dire need of something to do that would burn off some energy. Sooooo . . . .
Enter a laundry tub and two milk tins.

And some socks stuffed with beans.

Then we played bean bag toss, which sounds tame, but really isn’t in our house.

If you believe that orbs are ghosts, apparently our house is full of them! (you’d never believe we have a maid AND it’s raining with all the dust in here!)
Warp speed, please!!

See? Told you this was no tame game of tossing . . . note the beans spilled all over the floor from a burst sock!
Oh, and we’re taking suggestions for rainy day activities! Leave a comment.

Talk to Me, People!

When I was little, my Mom just sent us out in the rain. We played in the water with our homemade boats, dug up the yard for our streams and rivers. We played in the creek when it was not running to high for safety. She would strip us down and hose us off before we were let back into the house. My mother-in-law did the same with her kids, Linda has photos of herself all soaked and muddy from playing in the rain when she was 5 or 6 years old.
We used to play out in the rain a lot, too, Norm. Actually, the boys do too, but since Irving is currently washing all their clothes by hand, he’s not too keen on them getting muddy and even for them, 12 hours in pouring rain is a bit much.
Homemade playdough is an eternal favourite aroung here, but a new game I came up with is Clothespin (pegs we call them) Match. With a marker I write a capital A on one peg and a lower case a on another, then do this all the way through the alphabet. Then mix them up, and I get Charlie to find the matching letters. As he gets older there are so many things that I can think of from this ie, pin the pegs on things started with that letter, spell out simple words, write letters on seperate bits of card then get him to pin the matching letter on etc etc. At the moment he loves just saying the letters and moving them from one container to another, but then he’s not even two yet! Another one is use masking tape to make the shape of a race track on the floor for them to drive toy cars around. They can even colour in the tape to make the track more interesting. And the tape is easy to pull off the floor at the end of the day. Good luck keeping them entertained.
I usually just string painted penne pasta together to make costume jewelery for my mum and dad but I don’t think the boys will be so happy with that idea! LOL. What about marbles? Though it may annoy the marbles out of you, or your maid. Haha. Beans are good for arts, since you have them in abundance.
Make a thick paste of flour (plaster of paris but not quite?) and let the boys decorate it with beans, voila, you have masterpiece when it hardens!
Love the racetrack idea, Leiani! That’s a great one that they would love. The clothespin ones are good, too, but those are hard to find down here, maybe when we get up to Canada.
Gloria, we do the marbles, they dump them on the floor and then run around frantically trying to gather them all up before they disappear under the furniture! I will definitely have to try the paste idea with beans. We have lentils and all sorts of colored beans, so that could be a lot of fun!
