Rest In Peace

Last night, I was working happily away and suddenly . . . blick . . . my monitor went black. The power light flashed, but nothing. So I called my in-home computer tech, Irving and he started checking things out.
Two hours later, he´d ruled out a number of issues, but the computer still wasn´t working. So, I went to bed while he borrowed his brother´s computer and set it up for me to use in the morning. But, in the morning, he told me that the other computer was sort of working. Since I´m a creature of habit and really hate having to work on someone else´s computer, I jumped back on mine, despite a bizarre sign on process and quickly downloaded my writing assignments onto a memory stick . . . just in case.
As I was frantically trying to get my blogs done, the computer kept dying on me. It would just black out and then come back again. The whole complicated resetting the date and time and I could work for a little longer. But, just 3 blogs short, it died for good.
So, now I´m on my brother-in-law´s computer, trying to remember my passwords and dealing with Internet Explorer (I usually use FireFox). Not fun. Plus I´m a bit worried because I couldn´t burn the photos I have on that computer onto a DVD. Even if they vanish, I still have only about a month that isn´t backed up, but still. I should really start burning them every week or so.
Tomorrow, when Irving returns from his latest gig, he´s going to keep working on the computer. He thinks the motherboard battery has died. I´m completely clueless when it comes to stuff like this, so I´ll just let him deal with it and struggle along on this computer . . . without my usual fun distractions like Morrowind and Sims 2!

Too bad. My PC once rested in peace taking a whole year of baby photos with it to its grave. I learned a valuable lesson to backup, backup, backup!
I hope yours get fixed!
Aww, sorry to hear that! Hope it’s not anything wrong with your hard disk (wow, I use a tech term!).
I hawk this thing to much I should start getting paid for it. There’s this automated backup thingie called Mozy and you can set a time when to back up your stuffs everyday and it’ll do it for you. You can use up to 2GB free.
It works for me who have no idea about anything techie and backup whatnots. I just started using it after the computer crashed and ate my whole semester papers….for all 4 subjects! I wanted to die. =(
It was not all that long ago, I had both the desktop AND laptop needing some work done to them… New RAM for laptop to handle additional programs (and a fresh install of Windows), and the desktop needed a new video card, I also upped the RAM and just recently I put in a wireless network card as we have moved to a new ISP and it needed to connect to its wireless modem. So I am feeling for you… I hope you don’t lose any/to much data…
I’m sorry! My laptop died a while back, overheating so badly the insulation on the power cord melted into it. Luckily I use the desktop for pictures and such. (haven’t backed up in a month, though. yikes!) Do you back up your blogs, too? I can’t quited understand how, so if typepad ever crashes, I’m screwed. I hope you can get it fixed so you don’t lose your stuff!!
Grace, that´s awful! I try to burn my photos to DVD every so often, but I need to do it more often.
Gloria, that Moxy sounds like a good idea. I´ll be trying it out once I have files to back up again.
Bernie, aren´t laptops harder to fix than desktops? At least you have more RAM now.
Jessie, I do back up my blogs, since I lost them once! In Wordpress, it´s really simple, you just go to Options and Export the file. I have no idea how to do it in Typepad, though.
