San Pedro Las Huertas Refuge

We went to San Pedro’s shelter today and discovered that many of the families that had spent the past three nights there had moved in with friends and neighbors. They still need help and are very low on resources, but many people wanted to get back to their homes and start digging them out.

The guy who seemed to be in charge told me that there were 3,000 people in the refuge on Saturday night! The food company, Maseca which makes corn flour for tortillas and such was hosting an event when we arrived. So, Irving helped them bring people back from their mud cleaning and there were some games and fun things for the kids. They handed out food and there was a contest to give away things like a stove and cooktop. There was even a clown!

Please excuse these photos, it was starting to get dark and we were indoors.

When we first arrived, there were some kids playing outside. Dorian and Dante went off to play with some of the younger kids while I talked to one of the guys in charge.

While some kids and ALL of the moms were tired and weary . . .

Most of them were all smiles when they saw the clown and candy.

There were lots of games!

But some were more serious than others.

Even the dogs had to come in and see what all the ruckus was about.

Outside in the kitchen space, women made tortillas from the Maseca and got ready to feed everyone. We left before they served dinner, since it was late and my kids were getting VERY tired and hungry themselves.

Thank you for all the info and pictures Genesis. It sure puts in perspective what happened all around the country.
Thank God your family and friends are all safe and sound.

Thanks for the pictures. My sister and her family are in Antigua and these images of San Miguel and CV are so familiar and yet so different. Many thanks for bringing smiles to the faces of the children. I know my sister’s mother-in-law and other ladies are feeding those who have nothing. Monday they fed over 500 and didn’t feed everyone.
