Sleep Training . . . . AGAIN

Posted on June 15, 2008 - Filed Under Kids |

I hate trying to get my kids to sleep. To a certain extent, they are very good about going to bed. Since birth, I´ve been putting them down at 7 and they are pretty used to going to sleep at that hour. However, they both wake up a LOT at night. Dorian often plays for a bit in bed before falling asleep and that really doesn´t bother me as long as he´s quite. I remember a lot of fun, late night games that my sister and I played and would love for him to have those memories, too. But Dante is a different story.

Dante, while he was teething and suffering from assorted insect bites, got used to sleeping in his bouncy chair. He just doesn´t like to be alone at night and since he sleeps in our room still, we got into the habit of putting him to sleep with us out in the main room. Bad idea.

While Irving is away, this weekend, I´ve been trying to get Dante back into the habit of going to sleep in his crib. It´s not going so well. In fact, as I type this, he is angrily shrieking at me from his crib. He´s exhausted, he barely slept for either of his naps, but he refuses to go to sleep in his own bed. It doesn´t help that he can´t sleep during the day in our room because it is like a furnace in there with the tin roof and getting the most direct sunlight during the day.

I know he´d be out like a light if I just give in and move him for a couple of minutes in his chair. And that is super tempting. But, at the same time, I don´t want to have to deal with him waking up every time I move in my chair or get up to make coffee. And, we are hoping to move the boys in together shortly, but that can only happen if Dante is sleeping in his bed.

Irving figures the crib is the problem and wants to get him a proper bed. Gulp. He´s only a year old! He still does laps in his sleep, turned a different way every time I get up with him! But the truth is that Dorian was only a few months older when he was ousted from the crib by his new baby brother and he took to the bed like a fish to water. Maybe that would be a good idea, but I´m still not convinced that the crib is the issue . . .

The worst part is that we´ve been through this a couple of times now with Dante. He spent a little too much time at the in-laws, several months back and they would rock him to sleep in their arms . . . after which he had zero interest in being put down in the crib while still awake.

    Genesis;

    I have to agree with you, its not about the crib, but the habit of sleep. The way you’re doing it, Putting him in it and letting him cry, is the only way to break his habit. It might take a week or a month, but you’ll be glad you did it in the long run. I know because my oldest (Bella) was the same way, I honestly didn’t think I was going to live through her crying …but I did.

    hugs and prayers for your victory!
