Snake Update

It looks like we have an identification of the snake (apart from “legless reptile”). I finally found some photos of common snakes in Guatemala and it would appear to be Pituophis lineaticollis, or “Mazacuata de tierra fría”, which in English is called “Middle American gopher snake”.
Everything fits, the diamond patterned skin, the little head and the fact that it was out and about during the day. These snakes are . . . NON-Venomous! Yay! They like higher elevations (hence the appearance on a volcano) and are quite agressive (but without venom, so I`m not worried).
For Renee, this is the first snake I`ve seen in 7 years here in Guatemala, so I think you`re safe coming down. For everyone who doesn`t mind seeing a picture of a snake, here`s the little sucker right here.

Then it shouldn’t have been acting like a rattlesnake! Gophers are good for eating rodents and even other snakes…. oh well.. better safe than sorry for your little ones.
We have those guys (or ones like them) around here in SoCal. They’re pretty, once you confirm that they aren’t rattlers!
SNAKE!!! OMG, I went to the petstore the other day, and there was one in there… Last two pics… http://blog.burntofferings.id.au/2008/09/this-weekend.html
Hi! I have been away from your blog sick with some kind of flu last thursday and friday so i’m now playing catch-up! Thanks for the assurence that this is not a commen thing! An out of control snake population could make me change my mind and tell my husband “good luck in Guatemala babe, your on your own!” but i’m ok with that. I have serious snake issues let me tell you. One day my son asked me the most dreaded question of my life…could he hold one…my friend had one he assured me was harmless and friendly.I said yes but couldn’t watch, i thought i was gonna need to breath into a bag or something! Lol…
I hope you keep your grass cut!!Lol…
