Special Days

Lately, Dante has been getting left out a lot. He’s such a little goof that you wouldn’t guess it’s affecting him if you didn’t know him, but I know. I try to include him in school, but of course, he can’t sit still for more than 10 minutes and he likes to poke his brother and scribble on his papers, etc. About a week or so ago, though, I noticed that he’s been acting up even more than usual, being a bit goofier than normal and wrecking stuff more than normal. Plus, with Irving out of work, I’ve been working more and not hanging out as much as I should with the kids.
One day, for example, Dante started screaming for me. He wanted his milk. I came in and it was right at his feet! So I asked if he needed some attention, a hug maybe? He said “Yesssss.” And he got it. Plus a long snuggle.
I’ve changed my schedule around, to make sure I have enough time for enjoying the kids. We’re back on the night work schedule. I get up in the morning, do school and then hang out with the boys and sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon, then work after they’re in bed, from 7pm to about 3am, sleeping for a few more hours. It’s giving me a lot more time to just be around the boys in the mornings and early afternoon, which works well for all of us!
Today, I took Dante out for a one on one trip to town. He was quite upset at first that I was trying to leave Dorian and Irving behind! But then he decided it was cool to be on his own with Mama in the car and off we went. Unfortunately, he got up very early this morning and he was fighting sleep the whole way!
We went into town, got a few small errands done and headed to Sarita where he climbed up on a chair to point out the cone he wanted on the wall chart, just in case I didn’t understand his repeated, “Ice cweam wid CHOCOWAT!”
We enjoyed our ice cream with chocolate and then we headed home. He conked out on the way back, but was very happy when we got out and sang all the way up to the house.
We’ll be making these little one on one outings more frequent! Tomorrow is Dorian’s turn.

Bless you! You sound like a great mother.
Well, sounds like you came up with a great solution. Good for you.
That is important. You need ’special’ time with each kid. Fortunately, my two have different interests so it is easy to separate times without the other one wanting to join in, although we do group activities too
