Summer Blooms in Guatemala

Posted on November 29, 2008 - Filed Under Guatemala | 7 Comments

This is the time of year they call summer here . . . I still can`t wrap my head around Christmas being in the summer, or the fact that it is actually colder (but no rain) in summer. :) However, this means that we have lots of flowers blooming! So, I thought I`d share. These are all on the land that we share with Irving`s family, unless otherwise noted.

Sorry ahead of time for not knowing the names of most of these blooms! Maybe Bernie can help . . .

Orange blossoms
Orange blossoms, these give off the sweetest fragrance and they are right in front of our home!

Yellow flower
A pretty yellow flower.

itty bitty flower
Here`s a teensy weensy one . . . this little guy is only about half an inch across.

purple
This one reminds me of a plant we called “self-heal” in Canada, but I don`t know if it`s the same thing.

darling purple
Isn`t this one pretty? It`s also super tiny.

Poinsettias
Poinsettias in the wild! These are actually on our neighbor`s property. Not quite as cute as the little potted kind, but nice anyway.

more
A closer look.

Morning glory
Morning glories . . . they are all over the property in various shades of purple!

bird of paradise
A bird of paradise. I remember when I first saw these in L.A. I thought they were so exotic . . . now I see them every day!

purple
We sure have a lot of purple flowers growing around here! These are wild, too.

These were once in a pot, but the pot broke thanks to a certain toddler boy . . . and they escaped. Now they are growing all along our fence.

I think these are my favorites. They are coming over the fence from our other neighbor`s.

tiny white
These little guys grow on vines that are taking over the coffee bush we have behind the bathroom.

That`s it, that`s all that`s blooming right now . . . as if it weren`t enough! :)

Wait … you have a coffee bush? Does that mean you can make your own coffee? Mmmm, coffee …

    Beautiful pictures!

Technically, I COULD make my own coffee, but it`s a LOT of work and we would only end up with about half a cup of ground coffee after a couple of weeks! Besides, Dorian likes to eat the ripe coffee berries, so we never get a chance. :)

You could have stopped with the orange blossoms to make me jealous! I grew up in Florida with citrus trees all around. Part of the year, we soaked up the various citrus scent… then the gardenia bushes bloomed… oh my!

    …sooooooo! jealous! (but in a good way ;-) !)

Ok, first things first, L had a negative the other day… More on that later!

    From top to bottom…

Orange blossom, or is it a ‘Mock Orange (Murraya paniculata)? Does it set fruit, then it is Orange! If it is more of a bush, then its a Murraya.

Yellow flower looks like a Gazinia. Bit hard to see without any leaves.

The next two look more like weeds I’m afraid… Not sure on those AT all!

The Poinsettia (Euphorbia) is stunning to say the least! Do you also have the white ones by chance?

Morning Glory is a MAJOR weed here, and by law, must be removed… I would assume that is is covering a lot of everything there? As good as it may look, it can get away…

Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia regina, is a STUNNING plant and an awesome cut flower.

The Dahlia (purple) is a very hardy plant, herbaceous and can be divided up easily to create more plants. Go ahead be rough and cut it up and share it around. Just make sure that there is a couple of nodes on the rhizome…

Balsam or Inpatients, can tend to become a little weedy if not kept under control. Kids love to make the seed pods ‘explode’…

The last two, one looks like it is a climber that has a beautiful perfume. Not sure of its name though, sorry… The other is new to me!!

Hope this has helped somewhat, and great pics!!!

Thanks, Bernie! All of these except the Bird of Paradise are growing wild around here. :)

Christmas in the summer is fine, if you`re used to it, but remember I`m a white Christmas kinda gal, so it`s still a little weird for me. :D
