Swine Flu Hits Home

Well, swine flu is officially in Guatemala. While I still think it`s a lot of overexaggerated hype, it is now starting to affect us on a personal level.

A couple of days ago, Guatemala was put on Orange Alert and public gatherings are not permitted. I don`t know if they are actually enforcing this, I do know that in Mexico, they shut down schools and churches for the same reason . . . it remains to be seen how far it will go here.

So, since I don`t attend church or even leave the house on a regular basis, you`d think this is no big whoop, right? Well, unfortunately, having a musician for a partner does mean it affects us. No large groups means no concerts, no parties with a band . . . you get the picture. So the Banda Vega is on holiday until further notice and all upcoming gigs have been canceled. What was going to be a full weekend of work ended up being one small party that decided to go ahead and flaunt the rules. But for the rest of the weekend, Irving is going to be home.

This has two impacts around here. One, he`s going to be home. :) Now, I love my man dearly, but seriously, being together 24/7 nonstop is HARD. We tend to start bickering if we don`t get a break from each other and often his work is that break. And two, obviously, finances are going to be affected. Consider that Irving usually has between 3 and 6 gigs a week . . . it puts a bit of a cramp in things. Now, I have a new job and quite a few other side jobs, but the problem is that my jobs pay at the end of the month and it takes time for the money to go through several convoluted channels and finally make it`s way down here, so we usually rely on Irving`s income for the day to day stuff. Until now. :S

I`ll be glad when this stuff is all over and done with, let me tell you. In the meantime, I`m really wishing I had a laptop so I could escape to the flu-infested coffee shops in Antigua and work there. :D

Oh, and in other news, the motorcycle law has been changed to allow two people on a bike, but the back person has to wear a vest with a license number on it. Perfectly reasonable in my mind.

Hope both of you stay sane at the end of his forced holidays. LOL. Tell him to take the kids out…then you can have some ‘me’ time! ;)
