The Grand Switcharoo

When Dante was born, we decided that instead of buying a second crib and wasting all that money, we would just have Dante sleep in a bassinet until Dorian was ready for a bed. Little did we know that the baby was going to grow like a weed! He outgrew his baby tub/bassinet in a month! Now he sleeps in his bouncy chair . . . but he´s definitely ready to move on over to a crib.

Yesterday, our bed came back. After a month and a half! It´s redone, firm and WONDERFUL. And it means that we no longer have to cram in together on a tiny single bed. So the single bed went into Dorian´s room for his future use.

Then Irving said, “Why don´t we just move him now?” So, we did. We took the feet off the bed so it was lower to the ground and Dorian can get up onto it on his own and put it into the corner where his crib stood before and the crib by the door. I covered the mattress with a shower curtain to protect it from leaks and made it with a big boy blanket (with Shrek!) and sheets. Dorian was suitably impressed. He shrieked and climbed up onto the bed and flopped around happily on it.

I never expected it to affect me so much. Seeing my baby crawl into his big bed made me . . . sad. I even cried a little bit. First the haircut, now this . . . I´m not sure I can take much more of this growing up stuff!

Anyway, we settled him in his bed, read a story and kissed him goodnight. And went out. And shut the door. I knew what to expect, I´ve read tons about this. The kids always cry and fuss and want to come out and play and often fall asleep against the door. I was prepared . . . sort of. So, imagine my surprise when . . . nothing happened. He went to sleep. And he stayed asleep. Until 4 am when he got out of bed, undressed himself and went to his door, yelling “Irving! Morning!” When I opened his door, he handed me his pants and pranced out in all his glory, quite proud of himself!new-bed-1.jpg

Although Dorian was up awfully early, I´m so proud of him for sleeping the whole night in his new bed. We´ll see what today brings, I´m anticipating issues at naptime, but he might surprise me again. Then I think we are ready to move Dante into the crib. Now the big question is . . . do we take another leap and put Dante in with Dorian? Not sure Mama is ready for that!
