Things I Dislike, Yet Love

Posted on January 12, 2010 - Filed Under Friends, Fun | 7 Comments

My friend Gloria just posted a funny post on her blog about things she says she dislikes, but secretly loves. I’m going to join in her sort of unofficial meme, just because I’m kind of bored of blogging about all things Guatemala and because I have taken no photos (none that can be posted online, anyway) other than of food in the past few weeks. So here goes, things I dislike, yet secretly love.

1. Irving going off on gigs. I always complain about having accidentally chosen a musician as my man. He’s gone on all the big holidays, including Christmas, New Year’s, Semana Santa and even Valentine’s Day and that pisses me off half the time.

Yet . . . I love being on my own in the house at night. So, if he leaves later in the day, I enjoy some veg out time with the boys, we eat stuff we wouldn’t eat when Irving is home and once they are in bed, I luxuriate in being alone. I value my alone time and quite frankly, though I love him, Irving is a distraction at night. He watches movies that pull my attention away from cooking, blogging or working on client stuff and that is annoying.

2. Being woken up in the middle of the night. Nothing worse than juuuuuuuust falling asleep only to be woken by a child yelling, “MAMA!” Interrupting my sleep is NOT a good idea and I have troubles getting back to sleep.

Yet . . . There is also nothing so sweet as snuggling a warm body, heavy with sleep, and kissing a drooly little face and seeing those eyes flutter open just slightly and a sleepy smile spread over a chubby little face.

3. The cold. It’s been so cold lately and I’m freezing my butt off, since there’s no heat yet in our house. At night, I often wear two sweaters and a hat to bed!

Yet . . . when I step outside at night and the icy air tickles my nose, it reminds me of Canada. Though I haven’t been back in almost 9 years, I do miss it still and the feel of snow in the air.

4. Working for other people. My goal is to eventually phase out client work and earn everything from selling my own info products, cookbooks and such. In the meantime, I sigh heavily over having pressures and deadlines and mourn the time lost for working on my own stuff.

Yet . . . that’s how I earn my living and until my own stuff is pulling in a lot more, clients are a necessary evil. Not to mention, without the deadlines, I might not get anything done at all!

5. Girly stuff. I’ve been a tomboy all my life and my obvious lack of makeup and hair products means just about everyone knows that. I don’t own a single pair of dress shoes, I’ve never worn heels and at this point, I don’t even have a dress or skirt. When I was little, I would come home from church, strip off the frilly, lacey crud that I was forced to wear to worship (which I never understood, didn’t God love me in jeans, too?) and pull on pants and a tee shirt and heave a huge sigh of relief, then head out to climb a tree.

Yet . . . I do like the sensation of feeling beautiful when I’m all dressed up. When I was a teen, my dad bought me a long dark blue velvet dress. It was soft and flowed enough that I could still lift the skirt and run if I wanted to and it didn’t have a single frill or bit of lace. It was perfect for me. I felt gorgeous in it, but not restricted. AND, it was long enough that it almost covered my sneakers. ;)

Guatemalan fireworks. They drive me crazy a little, but there are some other folks nearby that drive me crazy, and the fireworks just about make them insane, and that makes me happy :)

I love the cold but hate that I have to wear thick socks and boots or sneakers all the time. But just love that bracing feel of the cold. I may take up the challenge on my own blog later on this week! I also (secretly) LOVE that my kids are grown and gone from home, even though I miss them. But, you know, comes that time in life when having all this time and space for oneself–and one’s husband–is soooo nice.
