To My 4 Year Old

This year has been a big one. You went from being a toddler to a big preschooler, you shot up about four inches and you went through 3 shoe sizes in 12 months. Things have changed so much in one year . . . I thought your first year of life was enough to shock me, but no, you keep managing to surprise me with how much you change each birthday.
This year . . .
- You realized that maybe kisses aren’t as disgusting as you thought . . . but just in case, you pretend not to like them, even though you giggle when you tell me NOT to kiss you.
- You started to tell me how you feel with words instead of hitting, saying things like, “I’m so very mad at you, Mama.” and “This makes me very GRRRR.” You also recognize how others feel and make a real effort to cheer them up. That’s a great trait to have at this age.
- You realized that the scar on your tummy is not caused by Dante poking you, but by surgery and you realized that you might have to do that again. I’m very sorry you had to learn that . . . but so happy at how well you understood and dealt with it.
- You started going to get the tortillas for lunch by yourself, going out the door, across the street, ordering and even getting the change!
- You begged me to teach you to read. Mama’s a little behind on that but I promise we will start in earnest in the new year.
- You started making healthier food choices because you understand that certain foods cause you tummy problems and you have the willpower to stay away from candy (most of the time) because it will make you sick. That’s a big accomplishment!
- You got the difference between English and Spanish and started asking for your movies to be in a specific language.
- You discovered “Bippy Mouse” and “Pooh”.
- You made a very big boy decision to try a new potty and use pull-ups instead of just sticking with diapers, which are so much easier.
Those might sound like little things, but really they’re big when you’re not even four yet. And four years ago today, I lay in a hospital, wondering what you would be like at this age and if you would be able to play and run and have fun like other kids . . . and here you are!
I love snuggling you in bed each morning when you climb in to “sleep” with me . . . but really that means you want to talk and nothing could make me happier than listening to you tell me about the different types of Transformers and explaining how cars work or where bugs live. I love watching you grow and change and I know this year will bring many challenges, because you’re turning into such an independent boy, who is confident in his decisions and not always so impressed with mine, but I hope that we’ll still enjoy cuddles and talking for many years to come.
Happy Birthday, Dorian!
