Wanted: Decent Yarn

Posted on December 20, 2009 - Filed Under Fun, Guatemala, Simple Life | 6 Comments

My mom has crocheted and knitted since before I was born. She tried to teach me, but I had even less patience at 10 than I do now (surprising, I know) and it didn’t take. Fast forward many years and I ended up learning to crochet from an English student of mine and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, around here, there are two types of yarn, baby and sport. Both acrylic, both quite cheap and not that pleasant to work with.

For small projects, I’ve ordered yarn on Ebay. However, I want to make an afghan and the thought of doing it in the yucky cheap yarn that is available here makes me shudder, but I’m also unwilling to spend hundreds on shipping some nice yarn down here.

So, I thought I would reach out to my Guatemala resident readers and see if anyone knows where you can get some decent yarn around here. Any thoughts?

Maybe ask one of the ladies who work the back-strap looms around town. They buy or make their own thread but should be able to direct you to some good yarn.

How long can you wait? If you can wait a week (or two) until after the ‘Silly Season’ has finished, I will get some for you and send it across!!! Mixed colours?? Or a single colour???

It would be horribly expensive to ship enough yarn for an afghan, Bernie, though I really appreciate the offer! I’d need 17+ balls so it’s not a small amount. :) I’m going to see if I can find someone like Norm suggested, who weaves.

Try a kiosk on the 3rd floor of La Pradera Mall (Zone 10) in Guate. They have very nice yarn. If you have any left over yarn, you can take it back to them and a group of volunteers knits caps for children with cancer who’ve lost their hair due to chemotherapy.
Maybe also El Mundo de las Manualidades in Gourmet Center Zone 10 (Blvd Los Proceres), though Im not really sure about this last one.

Hey Girl, I know where to get it. There’s a big shopping mall in Mixco where the Hiper Paiz is. I think the name of the store is “Puntitos” or “Puntos” I’m not quite sure but they do carry lots of needlework stuff, crocheting, knitting, sewing and yes, balls and balls of glorious yarn! Check it out.

Wow, thanks ladies! Now, if I can just convince Irving to let me drive to the capital . . .
