What a Week!

Posted on October 30, 2007 - Filed Under Personal, Simple Life |

And it´s only two days in! I´m quite worn out, but the work just keeps pouring in. And you know that only lasts so long before there is nothing at all! So here´s what we did yesterday and today . . .

- Bought the floor tiles. All of them. 28 boxes of tiles! I´m very excited about this because at the moment, the main room floor is just rough concrete. This time next week, it will be smooth terra cotta style tiles. :D

- Bought light fixtures. Yup, we are finally going to have light out there! Right now I do have a bare bulb hanging over the stove, but these are real light fixtures, the pretty frosted dome kind. Yay!

- Talked to the guy who will lay the floor. He´s coming tomorrow to start, he´ll be done on Sunday. :D

- Irving is picking up the blacksmith right now to measure the windows and door and give us a quote. If all goes well, we ought to have the room closed in by mid-Nov.

- Bought light switches, wire and electrical outlets. Irving´s brother is installing the wiring tomorrow, in the main room and in our bedroom. No more dozens of extension cords running all over the place, we are going to be able to have real lights and just turn them on and off with a switch. I can´t wait!

- Put a down payment on the fridge. We are going to have a new fridge! It´s not the one I wanted, but it will do and it´s about a third the price, so that´s good. It´s a big honking white thing with a giant freezer on top and pretty clear shelves. I´m sure we´ll dirty it up in no time flat. Oh, and it needs no defrosting, how´s that for cool?

- We sourced a couch and discovered that although every couch in Guatemala comes in a hideous multicolor print, you can actually just tell them that you want only the arm color (which is always solid)! Great news because I HATE the ugly couches they sell here. But if I can have it all in say, navy blue corduroy, I´m in!

Things that remain to be done . . . . in the next while:

- Install the floor

- Put glass into the windows, both new ones and all the broken ones that we have.

- Buy and install a false ceiling to cover the ugly black metal beams that support our lovely corrugated tin roof

- Repair plaster once the windows are in. There are chunks missing from my bedroom wall where the blacksmith knocked the plaster loose while installing the windows. Also, I want to replaster the boys´ room because the other builder did a terrible job of it and there are obvious ripples and seams everywhere.

- Paint. We have to repaint our room, paint the living room/kitchen . . . I´m thinking a dark yellow, like ochre, would go well with the terra cotta floor. Also, when my sister comes down for Christmas, I´m putting her to work helping me turn the boys´ room into a fire station.

- Building a bathroom, wall around the property and filling it in so we are up to the street level. That´s way in future though. At least for now we can have a kitchen!

As soon as the floor is in, I´ll be taking pictures, don´t worry!

    I want to see photo’s…

You are sounding almost as busy as we are..!! :)

Having said that, Lou is working this Saturday, a Christening on Sunday, followed by a week at work. Sat, madly pack and get things done before heading overseas Sunday morning. Things to do: Screen on screen doors, mow lawns and weed gardens, window awnings up on the side of the house… oh how the list goes on!!

Good luck with the tiler I hope that he does a great job, can’t wait to see it (take a before and after shot… ok)!

Wow. Having read all that I don’t think I’m allowed to complain about being busy at all this week! You are one BUSY LADY! So, what’s got you more excited, the floor or the fridge?

Bernie, I´m snapping away, but they only have one line laid so far. :D You sound busy, too!

Jessie, I don´t know which to be more excited about. :D Both of them are pretty great!
