Where Do I Find Some Happy?

Dorian has been coming up with little verbal surprises all over the place lately. I love it!

Today, he got up from his third failed nap attempt and I said, “Look, you can get up, but I want you to be happy, ok?”

Dorian shrugged, threw his hands out and said, “I want happy, too, but WHERE?”

Last night, we were watching tv and Dorian grabbed the remote control. I asked for it back so I could “change the channel” and he quickly handed it over.

“Change channel, no gusta. (I don´t like it)”. He said. And so I started flipping through channels looking for something decent to watch (thinking along the lines of C.S.I. or something) and he kept saying, “Nope. No gusta. Other channel. Nope. No gusta. No gusta.” until I got to the cartoons. Then he was very picky and only wanted Backyardigans! I can´t believe how decisive he´s getting.

I was outside washing dishes and Dorian was inside with Irving. Suddenly he yelled, “Oh no! Pawp cwun fell! It fell!”. Irving couldn´t understand what he was talking about and then he got it and called me in, laughing.

The end of the popcorn string on the Christmas tree had fallen down onto the floor. The funny thing is that no one around here has said the word “popcorn” since the beginning of December, when I made that string . . . only the word in Spanish (poporopos) has come up! I had no clue the kid was storing up words for future use. :D

Dorian is fascinated with animals and since there are horses and carriages all over Antigua, he loves to point them out and yell, “Caballo!” the word for horse in Spanish. I usually say something like, “Oh, yeah, look at that horse.” And he will repeat, “horse” but never uses the English word on his own.

Then, we were watching television the other day and a sheep came dancing onto the screen and he said, “hey, look. A horse!” Wrong animal, but at least he started to use the English version of the word.

He´s starting to differentiate between us and languages now. He will come to me and ask for coffee, but ask his papa for cafe. If we don´t understand the word in one language, he often tries the other. For example, he will say that he wants food, but if Irving doesn´t get what he means, he´ll say that he wants comida. This is very helpful when he is with the inlaws who don´t speak much English.

My little boy is really growing up!

How much fun is that going to be when they BOTH start doing this as well..

I think it is great that he is bilingual(sp) :-@ , but it is also unfortunate, that he has the ability to tell which language he needs to use to get the end result. A sure sign his is growing up… :(

He is looking like a cutie though!!! :))

Wow, I’m really impressed. It’s hard enough for a kid to learn one language! “Pawp cwun” was my favorite, though!
He must be one smart boy to have figured out when it’s best to Spanish or English.
As for the horse/sheep, Grant is constantly mooing at horses, so don’t feel bad!
