Why You Should Never Try to Fool an Almost 2 Year Old

Today, we got a new laxative for Dorian. It is very rare for one to work, but this is supposed to be good for patients who have constipation issues after bowel surgery. Anyway, we decided to try it since Movicol is no longer available anywhere.

Well, our little medicine lover has turned picky after a bad experience with codliver oil the other day (don´t ask, it wasn´t pretty), and he now refuses to take medicine. So, this new laxative is dark brown and looks like cola.

Now, I should mention here that I decided early on in Dorian´s life that it wasn´t fair to lie to him, so we decided that we would give him the truth so he would have time to prepare. For example, I tell him a few minutes ahead of time that he will be having an enema. He watches me warm it, he gets upset, but at least he isn´t shocked when we go to change him and suddenly shove something up his butt! My hope is that he will not be afraid of things in the future because he knows we´ll warn him ahead of time. I hope.

Anyway, I tasted this new laxative (just a smidge because I´m not in need of any help!) and it is like a sweet molassass. I offered some to Dorian and he refused it. So, I broke my cardinal rule and told him it was Pepsi. He almost never gets Pepsi and he loves it. So he deigned to taste it.

Then my little boy, still not yet two, looked me square in the eye and said, “That´s not Pepsi.” (Well, he said, Pepis, actually) Oops. With that, he shook his head and walked away and refused to even look at the medicine again. So, really, I lied to him for no good reason. He didn´t take it anyway, his taste was smaller than mine. That will teach me!
